A German anthropologist and vertebrate paleontologist; Fraas (1824-1897) was keeper of the geological and paleontological collections at the Naturalienkabinett, Stuttgart from 1854 to 1894. He is best known for his studies of mammals, pterodactyls and other vertebrates. He pioneered many early studies of fossils in Syria and Lebanon. The results of those studies are in the above two volume set. His son Eberhard (1862-1915) was to follow in his footsteps as a vertebrate paleontologist and continued studies in Syria and Egypt.
