A search of library databases shows no copies of this report. Although the author is not named on the title page, the verso shows the noted Pennsylvania author William F. Gedde as submitting the document to the Clerk’s Office in the eastern district of Pennsylvania. The preface makes note of the fact that only a few copies were printed for the purpose of affording a few friends a comprehensive view of the location and advantages of the several coal regions. He describes the coal trade in Pennsylvania, the three major coal districts in the “First Basin” which are the Lehigh, Schuykill and Swatara and there strata. He then provides details on the elevations and distances of travel of mines and canals in the region and describes the canal trade from the mines to eastern locations. Particular attention is given to the Lehigh Canal and Coal Company and its canal and railroad and the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company and its canal and railroad as well as the Morris Canal. He then describes the Schuykill Canal and its railroads, Port Clinton, the Little Schuykill Railroad and Coal Company, the Schuykill Haven Rail Road, the Mount Carbon and Pottsville Rail Road, Port Carbon and its rail roads and the Tuscarora.
This small very rare work has a wealth of historical information and details on the Pennsylvania anthracite region in its early years.
