The Lehigh Navigation Company was formed in 1798 and the Lehigh Coal Company in 1792. They merged on April 21, 1820 and were incorporated as the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company in 1822. The 1838 report to the board of managers discusses the mining in 1837 of nearly 200,000 tons of coal from its mines and their shipment from Mauch Chunk. The majority of the coal was shipped via the Lehigh Canal to various markets via the Morris Canal, the Delaware division of the Pennsylvania Canal and the Delaware and Raritan Canal. The report includes a table of distances between different points via the Lehigh Navigation Company, distances between Easton and Philadelphia via the Delaware Division of the State Canal and Easton and New York and distances of landing places on the Delaware Division of the Pennsylvania Canal. Detailed descriptions are provides of various mines and railroads and the anticipated future for both the mines and railroads serving these mines.
