This is Leidy's classic study of the mammalian fauna of the Dakotas and Nebraska. The fossils were collected by members of the Hayden/Warren expedition. He provides a detailed description of the various species of Carnivora, Rumantia, Artiodactyla, Perissodactyla, Solidungula and Rodentia found. Most are the first descriptions of these fossil mammals. The work also includes the beautiful engraved plates which are described within the work. Hayden's part of the volume is on the geology of the Tertiary includes the rare early hand colored geological map denoting the geology of the Black Hills. This map is usually missing from the report. The map is titled: "Map of Nebraska and Dakota, and Portions of the States and Territories Bordering Thereon, Compiled by Bv't Gen. G. K. Warren, Maj. Eng'rs, March 1867. Geology by F. V. Hayden, M.D." The work is "regarded by several leading American paleontologists as the greatest single publication of Leidy's career. Henry Fairfield Osborn praised the book by saying it 'ranks in breadth and accuracy as the finest single contribution that has been made to vertebrate paleontology in this country if not the world.' Hayden's geological map covers the entire country extending from the Canadian border south to Pueblo, Colorado, and from the Colorado Front Range east to Leavenworth, Kansas. It is one of his earliest and most distinctive large geological maps with the Black Hills clearly defined on the map.
