Within this short paper Brown gives one of the first detailed descriptions of strata along the coast of Cape Breton. The work is supplemented with a portion of Gesner's 1843 Geological Map of Nova Scotia. this is followed by Dawson's study of the Carboniferous rocks found in the coal formations of eastern Nova Scotia and Bunbury provides some of the first descriptions of fossil plants from the same region.
