An American engineer, Dahlgren was the son of Rear-Admiral John A. Dahlgren of the U. S. Navy. He spent considerable time in Mexico studying the mining industry and especially the older mines. He published the above work which remains one of the best studies of Mexico's mining industry. The work is divided into four parts with numerous sections. Part 1 provides an overview of the mining industry, its history up to the 1880s, mining methods, outside influence and investment. The remaining parts are a State by State look at the mines with maps of each area. Dahlgren provides details of each mine, its workings, the ore deposits and conditions at the time of his visit. The work contains an immense amount of historic data.
