A Russian crystallographer, Wyrouboff (1843-1913) was born in Moscow and also educated in Moscow in medicine and philosophy but his primary interest was in mineralogy and crystallography which he also studied at the University of Moscow. ?While still studying in the university, In 1866 Wyrouboff published his first work on the source of color found in fluorite, and became an early advocate of the organic coloring theory in crystals. His interests led to the study of crystalline forms, including the structure and physical properties of crystals which he encompassed in his dissertation which was entitled, Recherches sur la Structure des Corps Cristallisés doués du Pouvoir Rotatoire, (1886).
After completion of his studies, Wyrouboff was appointed professor of crystallography at the Collège de France in Paris in 1886. In 1889 he published “ Manuel Pratique De Cristallographie” and also became a French citizen that year. ?Wyrouboff’s Manuel of Crystallography is a treatise on the essentials of crystallography. While written for the student of mineralogy and crystallography the work attracted a far wider audience leading to Wyrouboff being acknowledged throughout the world as an authority on the subject.
