Bertrand (1712-1777) was a Swiss geologist and cleric. Over the course of his life and travels through the Alps, he built an impressive private collection of minerals and fossils. Some of these specimens were illustrated in color in Schmiedel's "Erz Stufen und Berg Arten" published in 1753. ?Bertrand’s “Recueil de Divers Traités sur l'Histoire Naturelle de la Terre et des Fossiles” is a collection of six of his treatises on the natural history of the earth and fossils.
An index at the end provides a listing of the titles of the works together with a breakdown of the important sections in each.
Perhaps the most important treatise contained in the collection is the "Essai de minérographie, et d'hydrographie du Canton de Berne." This is the first "Mineralography," or a alphabetical listing of the Cantons throughout Switzerland, with details given of the minerals and therapeutic springs that may be found at each location. This attempt was the first of its type, and provided a useful format for describing the mineral wealth of a geographical area.
