Jules Thurmann (1804-1855) was a Swiss geologist and botanist. His career was devoted to the stratigraphy and paleontology of the French and Swiss Jura Mountains. Thurmann was also a close friend of the noted geologists Jules Marcou (1824-1898) and Louis Agassiz (1807-1873). Marcou was to work with Thurmann on a geological survey of the Jura Mountains and much of Marcou’s thinking on the Jurassic was formed under Thurmann. Thurmann’s “Chaine du Jura” is with out a doubt his rarest work and thus seldom seen.
