Hitchcock (1793-1864), a noted naturalist and geologist at Amherst College; is best remembered for his pioneering studies of New England's geology and paleontology. He discovered evidence of glaciation in western Massachusetts and performed early pioneering studies in vertebrate paleontology and paleoichnology in the Triassic sandstones of Connecticut and Massachusetts. He also completed the first comprehensive geological survey of Massachusetts.
Following the publication of the first report of the Geological Survey of Massachusetts in 1834 and 1835., the subject of the renewal of the survey came before the State Legislature in 1837. The resolution passed and in accordance with the act of April 12, 1837 Hitchcock again took up the direction of the geological survey of Massachusetts.
