This is the geological section to the Guatemala and Salvador report of the famous French scientific expedition to Mexico and Central America. The complete publication report of the expedition was never finished but the two geological parts were completed with one covering Mexico and one covering Central America.
In 1864, as a consequence of the French invasion of Mexico, Napoleon III established the Commission Scientifique du Mexique, a large-scale multidisciplinary expedition whose members worked under difficult and often hostile conditions. Dollfuss and Montserrat were attached to that expedition. The commission’s work was not helped by the fact that the country was at war, and that situation made it difficult for members to do research unless they were under military protection. Although its activities were confined basically to central Mexico because the French army was nowhere near large enough to hold vast amounts of Mexican territory, the commission did attempt to work with local organizations and learned societies. Dollfus and Montserrat were to shift their focus from Mexico to Guatemala and adjacent areas as a result of the political turmoil in Mexico. Once in a safer location their research became far more productive with the results being contained in the above beautifully illustrated work. The plates consist of a large folded coloured geological map, 2 smaller maps and numerous views, especially of volcanoes.
The text contains the narrative of the expedition, observations on the climatology, geography and especially the geology of the volcanic regions.
The volcanoes of Guatemala and San Salvador were first accurately described in 1868in by Dollfus and Montserrat as part of the above work. This is a very scarce and beautifully produced work.
