George Horatio Derby (1823-1861) was born in Massachusetts and graduated from West Point in 1846 he served in the Army Topographical Engineers at Vera Cruz and Cerro Gordo. He sustained severe wounds in the 1847 battle of Cerro Gordo, and for gallant and meritorious conduct was brevetted first lieutenant. Upon recovery from his wounds Derby was sent to California where he remained for seven years, leading three exploring expeditions. His last commission was a surveyor and lighthouse engineer on the Florida coast. However, Derby’s wounds were to shorten his life and he died in 1861.

Derby’s official report on his survey and reconnaissance of the Gulf of California and the lower part of the Colorado River in 1850-1851. His survey includes some of the first accurate details on the region and the large folded map titled “Reconnaissance of the Colorado River” dated Dec. 1850 is the first detailed map of the region from the northern part of the Gulf of California to the point where the Gila River enters the Colorado River.
