Friedrich Wilhelm (1807-1876) was a German evangelical theologian, historian and publicist. Alexander von Humboldt (1769 – 1859) was a renowned German naturalist and explorer. Humboldt's quantitative work on botanical geography was the foundation of the field of biogeography. He wrote extensively on natural history, meteorology, and physical geography. He proved that the Amazon and Orinoco river systems are connected, and ascended to 5,877 m (19,280 ft) in the Andes, the highest ascent ever made at that time, researching the relation of temperature and altitude. He spent the next 20 years in Paris writing up his results. His description of his travels and observation was written up and published in several works over 21 years.
Wilhelm and Humboldt collaborated in writing on the life and exploits of Martin Behaim. Martin von Behaim (1459-1507) was a German mariner, cosmographer, astronomer, and geographer as well as a talented artist. Much of his career was in the service of the King of Portugal.
Our copy of the work contains only Humboldt's essay on the earliest maps of America and Behaim's globe. The globe is reproduced in the large elaborate colored four panel folded plate. The two single page maps by Humboldt are: "Karte von Amerika aus dem Jahre 1500 von Juan de la Cosa." and Karte von Amerika gezeichnet von Ruysch...von Ptolemaus...1508.
