The volume is complete and in the original green cloth with gilt titles. Owners signature on end sheet, very minor scuffing to boards. In near fine condition.

An American mineralogist and crystallographer, Whitlock (1868-1948) was the State Mineralogist of New York and curator and chair of the Dept. of Mineralogy of the American Museum of Natural History. He wrote extensively on both gems and minerals. His above work on the New York calcites remains the definitive work on the subject as well as the first to cover the extensive calcite localities in that state. The work includes a thorough bibliography on New York calcite. Whitlock is thorough in his coverage of this subject. Some 25 plates are provided in order to show the different types of calcite crystals found in New York and their broad range of forms.
