Cleaveland, (1780-1858) was educated at Harvard, Dartmouth and Bowdoin College. Initially he taught at Harvard and then became a Professor at the Medical School, Brunswick, Maine. His "Treatise" was first published in 1816 and is the second American work on mineralogy. Of more importance this is the first textbook authored by an American, which focused on the mineralogy and geology of America. The folded geological map was prepared in part from Maclure's earlier geological map and communications from Horace Hayden. It is considered the second major colored geological map of America. The first edition of the Treatise sold out immediately and Cleavelend was asked by his publisher in 1819 to prepare a second edition. For this work he decided to focus even more on American localities. The book is divided into two major parts. The first part covers crystallography, optical and physical properties of minerals, systematic mineralogy, chemistry, and descriptive mineralogy. Part two provides an introduction to geology with a view of the earth's crust, geological systems, veins, strata, mineral formations, Werner's classification and finally an important section on the geology of the United States, explanatory of the geological map. The work is especially noteworthy for its detailed information on the earliest mineral localities in the United States.
