Meek (1817-1876); an American invertebrate paleontologist made numerous contributions to invertebrate paleontology especially in the western United States. He examined the fossils from the Warren Expedition and Hayden surveys as well as other surveys in the study of the west and also worked intermittently with several state surveys. Meek & Hayden's work was the result of studies made by the authors while members of Warren's "Exploring Expedition" into the Dakotas, Nebraska and Montana Territories. The work was to have been part of Warren's famous publication under the War Department but was not completed in time. The plan was to give a full description in three works of all of the known fossils from the "Primordial" through the Tertiary. Part one provided a detailed description of the Primordial, Carboniferous, Permian, and Jurassic species. Descriptions of the genera and families for eah species is provided. Parts two and three were not published separately but became Volume 9 of Hayden's Report of the United States Geological Survey of the Territories, 1876, "Report of the Invertebrate Cretaceous and Tertiary Fossils of the Upper Missouri Country”. This was Meek's major contribution to the study of the invertebrate fossils collected during the Hayden surveys. Many of the fossils are first described within this study.
