Agassiz's study was completed in 1851 but for unknown reasons it was never published until 1880 when his son Alexander Agassiz discovered the manuscript and brought it to the attention of the Museum of Comparative Zoology. The study is based on Agassiz's work with the U.S. Coast Survey. His survey covers the reefs along Florida's coasts and the Florida Keys. The report is especially noted for the beautiful drawings of corals which were lithographed by the late A. Sonrel.
